Hands off our Pensions – Age UK and Rachel Reeves

received from Rachel Reeves MP

There will be an event held by Age UK regarding Women and the State Pension Age on Monday February 28th. They have confirmed that Steve Webb,  the Minister for Pensions, will be speaking.

As I’m sure you are aware under the proposals laid out in the Pensions Bill  to raise the State Pension Age, around 2.6 million women will have to wait longer than expected to qualify for their State Pensions. 330,000 women born between December 1953 and October 1954 will have their State Pension Age increased by 18 months or longer, while 33,000 women will see their State Pension Age rise by a full two years.

This event will be a chance to find out how these proposed changes will affect women across the country and a good opportunity to raise any issues you may have with the Pensions Minister.  Yvette Cooper and myself will also be speaking, as will women impacted by the State Pension Age rise and key organisations involved in representing these women.

The event will be held in Committee Room 6, House of Commons, on February 28 at 2:30pm. If you would like to come, please RSVP to Christine.quigley@ageuk.org.uk.

Please pass this message on to anyone you think would be interested. It would be really good to see you there.

Best wishes
Rachel Reeves

Under new proposals, the women’s state pension age will rise to 66 by 2020 – 6 years earlier than previously planned. This will mean that for some women, rather being able to retire at 64, they will now suddenly have to wait until they’re 66.

We think this is unfair and doesn’t give enough time for those women affected to properly plan for the change.
