Peer lets rip at ‘claustrophobic’ benefit cut for spare room tenants

A Labour peer has taken aim at the Government’s plan to cut the housing benefit of tenants with spare rooms in an impassioned speech in the House of Lords.
Baroness Hollis of Heigham called the reforms in the Welfare Reform Bill ‘claustrophobic’ and claimed the Government’s planned savings were based not on people downsizing but staying put and having their benefit cut.

She also said the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) definition of under-occupation differed from the Department for Communities and Local Government’s (DCLG) and called for the two to be aligned.
