Home help so poor for elderly it ‘threatens most basic human rights’

Researchers for a government funded human rights watchdog found that visits by carers are often so short and infrequent that there is not enough time to carry out even the most basic tasks.

That means overstretched home helps often have to make a choice between which essential needs to address, frequently foregoing mealtimes, for example, for washing and dressing.

They also have no choice but to leave people in bed for long periods of time.

The lack of care is so bad that basic human rights are in danger of being breached and it is inadvertently leading to people going to hospital or care homes prematurely, the report claims.
