Leeds City Council bosses urged to rethink homes closures

COUNCILLORS are calling for a council-run old people’s home to be spared the axe amid growing concerns over the future of ailing private care provider Southern Cross.

Darlington-based Southern, which has 326 beds in Leeds and looks after 31,000 people in its 750 care homes across the country, revealed a £311m loss in the six months to March 31 and is struggling to meet a £230m annual rental bill. Adult social care bosses in Leeds last month announced proposals to close six of the council’s residential care homes including Knowle Manor in Morley.

But with Southern Cross facing uncertainty, Morley Borough Independent councillors are urging that Knowle Manor be retained, arguing its beds could be needed.
