Elderly care costs soar for millions as councils feel pinch

Millions of elderly people face extra charges for vital services such as home helps and meals on wheels.

Almost nine in ten councils say Government cuts are forcing them to increase charges for frail older people to access the social care services they need, such as help with bathing  and dressing.

Some local authorities are planning on closing council-run care homes and day centres, while others are dramatically tightening up eligibility criteria for free care, a Labour Party survey has found.

The revelation that councils up and down the country are slashing the services which enable older people to stay in their own homes is another example of the crisis in elderly care.
