Disability charity fears impact of benefits plan

THE chairman of a leading disability group has criticised proposed changes to the benefits system which could affect more than 60,000 people across North Staffordshire.

Ministers claim changes are needed to make the welfare system more targeted and efficient, but critics claim it will mean the vulnerable being hit by Government cuts.

Officials are now undertaking a major review of Incapacity Benefit (IB) to see whether those receiving the out-of-work payment – numbering 23,100 in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire – are actually fit for employment.

The Government is also planning to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) – received by 37,080 people in the city and north of the county – with another payment that fewer people will qualify for.
