Disability benefit cuts ‘could breach law’

Plans to cut disability benefits could breach human rights laws, the government has been warned.

Ministers want to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with a new Personal Independence Payment.

The government says the changes are designed to streamline the system as well as make cuts of 20%.

Disability lawyer Mike Charles told the BBC the moves could be unlawful if they denied individuals the right to quality of life.

It’s brilliant that someone like Mr Charles has spoken out, this opens a big can of worms, which i hope will haunt this government. I’ve felt for a long time that people’s human rights are being violated by this government in many ways, and this is a great example. In the absence of an opposition party we need people like Mr Charles. Please email the BBC and Mr Charles to thank him.
