Propaganda – guest post by Silver

Noam Chomsky Massachusetts Institute of Technology, March 17, 1991
Excerpted from the Alternative Press Review, Fall 1993

Let me begin by counter-posing two different conceptions of democracy. One conception of democracy has it that a democratic society is one in which the public has the means to participate in some meaningful way in the management of their own affairs and the means of information are open and free….

An alternative conception of democracy is that the public must be barred from managing of their own affairs and the means of information must be kept narrowly and rigidly controlled. That may sound like an odd conception of democracy, but it’s important to understand that it is the prevailing conception….

Propaganda is the art of persuasion – persuading others that your ‘side of the story’ is correct. Propaganda might take the form of persuading others that your military might is too great to be challenged; that your political might within a nation is too great or popular to challenge etc.
Over the past decade, the use of such “information operations” to sway opinion and deceive adversaries has become an integral part of virtually all US military actions around the world, as strategists increasingly view “information superiority” as the key to keeping peace and winning wars.

Is not our Government using Propaganda to Demonise the poor, sick, unemployed and disabled. To remove our rights to a normal social life, to a Independent Life.

What does it say about a civilised society that uses Propaganda against its own Citizens. Our press is right winged and supportive of this Government. The BBC is under pressure of its funding and not acting in a fair or equal manner in its journalism and coverage on the new Cuts outlined by the Government. If our leaders are resorting to Propaganda to get its case across……

While it may be legal, it is certainly IMMORAL.

Yes, i couldn’t agree more, it smacks of another age and country where a minority were first demonised and they ethinically cleansed……….we all need to stand up for the oppressed in society, and state clearly it is the duty of the government and all able-bodied people to look after the sick and disabled community. This makes us special as a society, not the opposite which is to denegrate and neglect the thousands of people who cannot speak for themselves.

If people on Benefits are the victims of a propaganda campaign – and I believe they have been over the last few years – then there’s a need to offer an alternative “viewpoint”. As part of the campaign against unjustifiable Government cuts, Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) wants to publicise the stories of people who will be on the receiving end of this propaganda war that’s being waged. If you have a story, please tell it to DPAC.
